Mafalda's creator gets a home of his own in Argentina

Six years after the death of Quino, the cartoonist Joaquín Salvador Lavado, the Argentine province of Mendoza has opened the Espacio Cultural Quino. Its eleven rooms trace the world of Mafalda, from her first comic strip to a recreation of the artist's Buenos Aires studio.

The project was developed with Quino's family, who lent original pieces including his drawing board, his personal library and honours such as the Prince of Asturias Award. These had been kept for years by his nephews and nieces.

The centre sits in the former Escuela Mitre, a heritage-listed school building from 1906 on the border of Mendoza city and Godoy Cruz, restored for its new role. It aims to keep the critical, playful spirit of his work alive and to present comic art as a language everyone can share.
